When you have symptoms of breathlessness / chest heaviness, fatigue, palpitation at rest or with exertion. Patients having dizziness should also visit a cardiologist. Beside patients of high BP, diabetes or high cholesterol and those having family history of heart disease should visit nearest cardiologist routinely.
Simple clinical examination by a cardiologist is necessary along with sugar, cholesterol and few cardiac marker levels are helpful to assess patients’ cardiac risk in asymptomatic patients. In symptomatic patient’s ECG, Echo, TMT are baseline tests to confirm or exclude a disease.
A positive non-invasive test or diagnostic ECG usually calls for angiography, but final decision should be done by a cardiologist. Routine angiography in patients without any symptoms or a positive test is not indicated.
Sudden onset of chest pain / chest tightness or dyspnea are most common manifestation of heart attack. Few patients can present with palpitation, dizziness or epigastric discomfort. Unusual and atypical symptoms are common in females and patients with diabetes.
Smoking and diabetes are most common risk factors for CAD, smoking is most common cause of heart attack in young patients. Up to 75% of Diabetes patients suffers from heart disease.
Continued adherence to medication, exercise, dietary restriction is must. Routine monitoring of sugar, cholesterol and BP is required.
